Made with Europe: Why the Future of Medtech Is Taking Shape Across Borders

At the Swiss Medtech Day 2026 in Bern, it became clear just how closely Switzerland and Europe are already collaborating in the field of medical technology. Stephan Ging, CEO of synaforce Schweiz AG, was there and explains the role a sovereign European cloud plays in this process.

Around 800 representatives from industry, research, and healthcare gathered at the Kursaal Bern on June 10, 2026. The central theme of Swiss Medtech Day signaled a clear direction for the industry: Mastering Complexity, Integration beats Fragmentation. The message behind it is unmistakable. In an environment marked by growing cost pressures, increasingly complex healthcare systems, and rising demands for innovation and supply security, the industry can no longer move forward with isolated, siloed solutions. What matters is the interplay of technologies, markets, and processes. Integration thus shifts from a technical detail to a strategic issue that determines the competitiveness of entire regions.

A Keynote That Set the Tone

The most important insight for us came from Oliver Bisazza, CEO of MedTech Europe. Speaking in Bern, he discussed the next phase of the European medical technology sector and divided it into three chapters: from harmonization, through disruption, to a renewed opportunity. His central idea: A stronger Europe must not be a more insular Europe. Bisazza described the transition from “Made in EU” to “Made with Europe” and made it clear that Switzerland is already an integral part of this ecosystem. One of his statements summed it up perfectly: “Switzerland is already helping build Europe’s medtech future.”

This statement is more than a friendly gesture toward the host country, Switzerland. It describes a reality. Switzerland does not stand on the periphery of the European medtech ecosystem; rather, it is an integral part of it. Specialized manufacturing, research, supply chains, patient access, and healthcare systems have long been intertwined across national borders.

The extent of this interdependence and the limits to which it extends are particularly evident when it comes to data. A manufacturer that develops an implant in Switzerland and monitors its use in clinical practice in the EU collects highly sensitive patient data in both jurisdictions. This is where two sets of regulations intersect. The GDPR in the EU and the revised Data Protection Act in Switzerland require that health data requiring special protection be processed and stored within the respective economic area. Therefore, anyone conducting research and providing treatment in both markets cannot simply consolidate their data into a single cloud without violating applicable law.

This is exactly where providers like synaforce come into play. We operate separate data centers in both legal jurisdictions—in the EU and in Switzerland—and bundle them into a single, one-stop service. Swiss data stays in Switzerland, EU data stays in the EU, and yet both environments work together in a way that enables research and care across national borders. The manufacturer does not have to choose between legal certainty and cross-border collaboration. They get both. This allows value creation spread across Europe to be digitally mapped without being compromised by political or regulatory borders.

Bisazza summed up the main thrust in a few words: From uncertainty to reliability. From duplication of effort to cooperation. From “Made in the EU” to “Made with Europe.” Behind this lies a promise of high standards, less regulatory duplication, greater predictability, and better access. For an industry that operates on long development cycles and requires regulatory certainty, predictability is not a mere nicety but a prerequisite for any investment decision.

Why this topic is so relevant to synaforce

This is precisely where we see our role. synaforce does not manufacture medical devices itself. We are the enabler within the medtech ecosystem. As a European cloud provider, we operate our own data center infrastructure in the EU and Switzerland, within sovereign data spaces. This infrastructure forms the foundation for cross-jurisdictional cloud solutions from a single source. One provider, one solution for all of Europe. In this way, we lay the foundation upon which research, integration with healthcare systems, and digital innovations can flourish.

This is about more than just technology. It is about data sovereignty for sensitive patient data and the freedom to operate hybrid clouds across different countries in a way that ensures legal and regulatory requirements are met. For us, “Made with Europe” means that the EU and Switzerland act in concert and that companies can rely on a dependable infrastructure

Ultimately, the entire medtech industry provides solutions to the healthcare sector. Germany is already demonstrating what a strong healthcare story can look like. Switzerland still has untapped potential in this area, which it is increasingly leveraging. A sovereign European cloud is essential for ensuring that this cross-border integration works effectively.

“In Bern, Oliver Bisazza summed up what has long driven us at synaforce. We see ourselves as enablers on this journey. As a European cloud provider in the EU and Switzerland, we create sovereign data spaces where research, healthcare systems, and innovation come together. For us, this means, quite simply: Made with Europe.” — Stephan Ging, CEO of synaforce Schweiz AG

Looking Ahead

Swiss Medtech Day has shown that the industry is at a turning point. Cost pressures, increasingly complex healthcare systems, and rising demands for innovation and supply security can only be addressed through collaboration. The answer lies in integration and in an infrastructure that is conceived on a European scale and naturally includes Switzerland. As Bisazza put it: The next chapter begins now. Let’s write it together. An ecosystem, trusted partners, a shared future.

We at synaforce accept this invitation. Our role is clearly defined. We provide the digital foundation on which the medtech industry can pursue its innovations securely, confidently, and across national borders. Anyone who wants to take this path in practice needs a workable roadmap.

We have summarized what a secure cloud infrastructure for the medtech industry looks like in practice and how companies can use it to safeguard their digital innovations in a playbook.
